Llucena: Torre de Foios, the watermills and the town above the river

Llucena occupies a ridge between Barranc de la Pedrenyera and the Riu Llucena, while several attractions lie across the wider municipality. The photograph shows the surviving walls of the Iberian Torre de Foios, not the watermill route or a hydraulic structure.

Foios was an Iberian defensive complex

The site stands on a promontory in the Foios area at 898 metres above sea level, controlling a natural pass. Its tower formed part of a larger defence with an enclosing wall and bastions, so the visible remains should not be read as a mill, farmhouse or medieval tower. It was declared a National Monument in 1931.

The watermill route follows a different axis

The natural trail follows the river environment and explains how flour mills and one electrical installation used water power. The provincial circular route measures 11.15 kilometres, gains 508 metres and follows PR-CV 326 between mills and farmsteads. Those figures rule out describing it as a short urban stroll.

The arcaded square organises the town centre

The historic centre groups an arcaded square, Assumption church and town hall, with streets overlooking riverside plots and meanders. On the upper ground, the Dukes of Híjar building occupies the former castle site. Sant Antoni chapel and Sant Miquel de les Torrocelles are other destinations, not immediate extensions of the square.
