Atzeneta del Maestrat: walls, a prison tower and the Castell

At Atzeneta del Maestrat, the walled past is not concentrated in one grand monument. It survives in the Torre de la Presó, in remains built into houses on Carrer de l’Orde de Montesa and in La Sala, structures that explain different defensive, judicial and civic functions.

The prison tower

The tower formed part of the medieval walls in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It became a prison in 1853 and retained that use into the 1960s; today it serves as an interpretation space. This change of purpose is central to its interest, showing how an urban defence was absorbed into the town’s administrative life.

La Sala and traces of the walls

The former Casa de la Vila, known as La Sala, also served as the commander’s palace and a hospital. It now accommodates municipal and cultural services. From here, Carrer de l’Orde de Montesa is the logical place to look for sections and alignments of the old enclosure, rather than expecting a complete surviving circuit.

The Castell is outside the town

The Castell hermitage dates from 1516 and forms its own complex about four kilometres from the settlement. The photograph in this guide shows that site, not an urban castle or the prison tower. Treat it as a separate journey and check current access conditions.
