Benafigos: Plaça Major, Carrer Cavallers and Ortisella sanctuary

The photograph is a close-up of the corner where Plaça Major meets Carrer Cavallers in Benafigos. Two blue ceramic signs identify the streets on a wall with cracked render and visible cables. It shows neither the medieval hilltop profile, the church nor Ortisella sanctuary.

Carrer Cavallers leads through the old centre

Valencian Community Tourism locates traces of the town wall along this street: former gateways and sections of wall became incorporated into house façades. The photographed sign points towards that setting, but no particular wall should be labelled as a fortification without architectural documentation.

San Juan Bautista has a fortress-like appearance

The parish church originated in the 13th century and was remodelled in the 18th. It retains Gothic arches and a defensive appearance; institutional sources suggest that it may reuse walls from the former fortification. This is a cautious historical interpretation, not proof that the entire present church is the old castle.

Ortisella lies outside the village

The sanctuary was built in 1567 in the Ortisella valley and received later additions. Provincial information places it several kilometres from the village, beside three springs and the trunk of an old elm. It therefore requires a separate journey and is not part of the urban corner shown in the photograph.
