Xodos occupies a rocky platform above the Alcalatén river, its houses fitted to steep streets and the edge known as La Roca. The photograph is a distant panorama of the settlement, road and misty slopes; it does not show each castle remain clearly enough for precise identification.
Castle, Portal and Callís share one defensive story
The upper area retains the keep and sections of the medieval castle wall. Portal is a stone gate tower that once controlled entry, while Callís preserves structures incorporated into the village. These are partial remains rather than a completely rebuilt castle, so follow the street layout and respect closures or unstable areas.
The church square leads to La Roca
The square groups Sant Pere parish church, the Portal tower and access along Carrer Major to the La Roca viewpoint. The provincial listing describes the present church as a seventeenth-century building with later changes, one nave, three altars and a bell tower; it holds earlier objects including a Gothic processional cross. Interior access depends on specific opening.
GR-33 is not simply another village street
GR-33 crosses Xodos and coincides with part of the historic Camí dels Pelegrins de les Useres towards Sant Joan de Penyagolosa. The natural park also extends through Vistabella del Maestrat and Villahermosa del Río: Xodos village should not be confused with the sanctuary or the summit.
A route across the massif requires a chosen itinerary and checks on distance, ascent, weather, water and park notices. This documentary review explains how the places relate but does not certify the surface, signs, castle access or building opening through an on-site inspection.
