Borriol: rock castle, Morería and the Via Augusta corridor

The photograph shows Borriol Castle from the rocky slope. Towers, curtain walls and two stepped enclosures that use the ridge are visible. The frame excludes Morería on the south-east slope, the town below and the route of Via Augusta.

The fortress occupies the entire upper ridge

The council describes a Muslim-period rock castle with an irregular upper enclosure, principal buildings and two cisterns, plus a lower barbican. Later Christian work altered the Islamic structure. The image records this adaptation to the terrain, but neither the condition of each room nor a safe access route.

Morería descends towards the town

The Morería settlement extends down the south-east slope between the Alforges and Palau, or Atzavara, ravines. It is an archaeological area distinct from the walled summit. A guided visit or council material is the appropriate way to understand both spaces; shortcuts on the slope should not be improvised.

Via Augusta crosses the corridor, not the castle

The Roman road crosses the municipality from south-east to north-west through the inland passage between the range and coastal mountains. It relates to other sites and surviving objects, whereas the castle occupies another chronology and location. The ascent path should not be presented as the Roman road itself.
