Alcalà de Xivert: three visits between castle, bell tower and sea

Alcalà de Xivert-Alcossebre combines mountains, an inland town and the coast, but not on one continuous route. Xivert Castle stands in the sierra; San Juan Bautista church and its bell tower are in central Alcalà; Alcossebre contains the beaches and coastal services. Choosing two of these areas generally makes a clearer day than trying to link all three without transfer time.

A castle with two principal phases

The fortress is Islamic in origin and was altered after conquest by the Order of the Temple. The division between castle and settlement, citadel, albacar refuge, twin towers and Kufic inscriptions reveal different layers. The photograph shows the citadel interior and its walls, not a general view from the valley.

Access is through a mountain setting and guided visits operate seasonally. Check current information, weather and path conditions before going up; do not assume that tours announced for one campaign continue throughout the year.

Church and tower are separate structures

San Juan Bautista church was built between 1736 and 1766 in the Valencian Classical Baroque style. Beside it, the octagonal bell tower is an independent structure and the town’s dominant vertical landmark. Entry to the interiors or tower depends on current activities and opening arrangements.

Alcossebre and Serra d’Irta

Alcossebre is the coastal settlement in the same municipality. Its beaches and the coves of Serra d’Irta require another transfer; a route in the natural park also means checking its line and restrictions. Beach, castle and bell tower should not be presented as consecutive stops on foot.
