The Villas Route, Sant Vicent Tower and Montornés Castle belong to two distinct Benicàssim landscapes.

Benicàssim preserves two stories that should not be merged. On the coast, Sant Vicent Tower and the villas explain defence and the rise of upper-class summer holidays. In the hills, Desert de les Palmes contains paths, old and present Carmelite monasteries and the ruins of Montornés. The photograph shows that castle on the slope.

The coastal route has clear boundaries

The Villas Route follows the promenade between Sant Vicent Tower and Hotel Voramar. The municipal visitor inventory records 51 listed villas, 19 of them signposted. The names “Hell”, “Celestial Court” and “Limbo” belong to the area’s social memory; they are not administrative districts and do not imply access inside the houses.

Sant Vicent Tower was built between 1597 and 1599 to strengthen coastal defence against corsair attacks. It now serves as an interpretation centre with its own opening arrangements. The exterior is visible from the promenade, but an interior visit must be checked separately.

Montornés is not on the promenade

Montornés Castle occupies a height in Desert de les Palmes Natural Park and appears in the photograph. It is a ruined complex on a mountain route, not an extension of the Villas Route. The park also covers land in Cabanes, Borriol, la Pobla Tornesa and Castelló de la Plana as well as Benicàssim.

Choose an official itinerary for the Desert and check heat, wind, fire risk and closures. The Sea Greenway starts near the former Les Villes railway halt towards Oropesa and forms a third route; it does not lead to the castle or replace preparation for a mountain walk.
