Vilafranca: dry-stone landscape, Gothic market hall and old town

The photograph shows dry-stone walls and enclosures in Vilafranca’s pastoral landscape; it is not a view of the museum. These structures divide land and use available stone without binding material. UNESCO recognised the knowledge and techniques of this shared art in 2018; that does not designate every wall in the municipality as an individual monument.

The museum occupies the former Gothic market hall

Museu de la Pedra en Sec is on the upper floor of the old market hall beside the town hall. Tools, models, panels and projections explain the construction of walls, huts, terraces, wells and ponds. Its displays help interpret the photographed landscape, but building opening and a walk in the countryside are separate visits.

The old town retains medieval and Renaissance features

From the market hall, a walk can connect the Gothic town hall with Portal de Sant Roc, the medieval oven and houses bearing coats of arms. The parish church of Santa Maria Magdalena is an example of Valencian Renaissance architecture and contains works of art. Publicly visible exteriors do not establish that every interior is open at the same time.

The dry-stone itineraries leave the town centre

Museum information links three routes to different land uses: Pla del Mosorro to livestock, Les Virtuts to farmsteads and La Parreta to woodland. Other places in the municipality, including Pobla del Bellestar and Barranc de la Fos, require their own travel and planning; they are not immediate continuations of the town visit.
