Ares del Maestrat: beneath the castle rock and facing Gasulla

Ares del Maestrat rests directly against the rock of Mola del Castell. The square, market hall and former prison form a compact circuit; defensive ruins occupy the upper rock; and the Gasulla ravine’s rock art lies outside the village under its own visiting system. The new photograph shows the settlement and castle rock rather than a generic municipal landscape.

From the square to the castle cave

On Plaça Major, the former pointed-arch market hall now houses the town hall, while the old prison preserves another function of the medieval building. A climb from the houses reaches the Mola, where walls, tower remains and a rock-cut cave survive. The complex is ruined, so the terrain explains as much as the remaining masonry.

The ascent requires suitable footwear and care in wind, ice or rain. This review does not certify the present condition of the route or opening of the cave and other interiors.

Mola d’Ares is a different landform

Mola del Castell supports the fortress beside the settlement. Mola d’Ares is a larger natural area with paths and a restored snow store associated with the former ice trade. Keeping the names distinct avoids suggesting that every site is included in the short castle ascent.

Gasulla requires a guide

Cova Remígia and Cingle de la Mola Remígia preserve Levantine rock art. Official sources state that visits start around La Montalbana and are accompanied by a Valltorta Museum guide. Do not attempt to locate the shelters independently; confirm booking, meeting point and conditions before travelling.
