Les Coves de Vinromà offers two distinct readings: a town centre with medieval remains and churches from different periods, and a large territory crossed by watercourses and ravines containing rock art. The photograph is not the historic centre; it shows the rocky Riu de les Coves below limestone shelters.
Portalet starts the walk through the former town
Portalet is the surviving entrance to the medieval settlement. From it, visitors can seek out wall fragments incorporated into houses, Casa Boix Moliner and historic water points such as Font de la Vila and Font de Company. They do not form one continuous monument: they are separate features distributed through the streets.
The old church and Assumption are different buildings
The old church of Els Desemparats was the former parish, Gothic in origin with Renaissance remains. The Assumption parish church is a later eighteenth-century building with Baroque and Neoclassical features and a collection of precious metalwork. The town museum collection holds finds associated with the old church; both the museum and church interiors depend on specific opening arrangements.
The river leads towards mills and rock shelters
La Moreria and the Riu de Sant Miquel area contain natural caves, remains of watermills, historical traces and a protected botanical micro-reserve. The regional listing gives the Molins route as roughly 12 kilometres. Barranc de la Valltorta belongs to a cultural park spanning several municipalities and preserves Levantine rock art recognised by UNESCO.
Seeing the paintings is not a matter of walking freely into any shelter. Ask Museu de la Valltorta which sites can be visited and whether accompaniment is required, and check heat, weather and riverbed conditions beforehand.
