Spain’s non-contributory pension reaches €628.80 in 2026, but household income determines the award

The full award is €8,803.20 a year in fourteen payments; age, residence, disability and household resources determine eligibility and the final amount.

Spain’s non-contributory retirement and disability pensions have a full 2026 rate of €628.80 a month in fourteen payments, or €8,803.20 a year. That headline figure is not a flat payment. The individual award falls where there is certain personal income, other resources in the family household or more than one beneficiary living at the same address.

The Generalitat, which administers these pensions in the Valencian Community, also sets a 25% floor of €157.20 a month. Where two beneficiaries live in the same household, the full individual rate is €534.48 a month; for three it is €503.04. Only the actual household composition and resources can produce the final calculation.

Two pensions with different eligibility rules

The retirement pension requires an applicant to be at least 65 and to have lived legally in Spain for ten years between age 16 and the claim, including the two consecutive years immediately before it. The disability pension is for people aged 18 to 64, requires five years’ residence —again including the two immediately before the claim— and recognised disability of at least 65%.

For either pension, the applicant’s personal 2026 income must be below €8,803.20. Living with a spouse or relatives up to the second degree also triggers a family-household test. For two people, the general ceiling is €14,965.44; if one is the applicant’s parent or child, it rises to €37,413.60. Merely sharing an address with someone who is not a spouse or such a relative does not bring that person’s income into the calculation.

The amount can change after an award

The Imserso’s official calculation guide says personal income above 35% of the annual pension —€3,081.12 in 2026— reduces the award by the excess, subject to the statutory minimum where entitlement continues. A disability pensioner with at least 75% disability who is certified as needing another person for essential daily activities receives an additional €4,401.60 a year; the full rate plus that supplement is €943.20 a month.

Claims can be filed through the Generalitat’s online portal or any accepted public registry and are handled by the provincial Social Services office in Alicante, Castellón or Valencia. The published maximum decision period is 90 working days. A disability claim requires either the disability assessment decision or proof that an assessment has been requested.

Changes must be reported within thirty days

An award does not end the income checks. Pensioners must report within 30 days any change in their household, marital status, residence or personal and family resources that could affect entitlement or the amount. When requested by the administering office, the annual income declaration is due in the first quarter of the year.

The figures come from the Generalitat’s PNC procedure and Imserso’s 2026 calculation guide. This article will need updating when the 2027 rates and thresholds are approved, or if forms, incompatibility rules or income-reporting duties change.
