The photograph shows San Marcos hermitage rather than a street in the historic centre. Its tiled dome and arcaded outer enclosure are clearly visible. The complex lies in the countryside near the River Cantavieja corridor and requires a separate journey from the village.
San Marcos combines a church with a former fairground
The hermitage developed between the fifteenth and eighteenth centuries, combining medieval elements with Baroque alterations. Its enclosed outer area retains arches and a cobbled surface; fairs associated with the feast days of San Marcos and San Juan were formerly held here. It is neither the main square nor the village parish church.
The village retains civic and religious buildings
In the centre, the sixteenth-century ashlar town hall, Gothic oven, stone fountain, washhouse and former jail represent different everyday functions. Santa María del Pópulo parish church retains a Romanesque-tradition doorway and Gothic spaces, together with the sculpture known as Virgen de la Naranja.
Olcaf castle is not part of the street plan
The castle ruins stand on a hill at close to 1,200 metres above sea level. Their strategic position belongs to the border landscape between Els Ports and Aragón, but reaching the village is not the same as visiting the fortification. The ascent requires a current check on route, land access, hunting, weather and ground conditions.
San Marcos, the village and the castle are three separate visits. This documentary review does not establish interior opening, rural road access, trail safety or accessibility through an on-site inspection.
