Castellfort: stone, elevation and the historic path to Sant Pere

The photograph shows how Castellfort adapts to an elevated rocky ridge: houses occupy its terraces and the Assumption parish church closes the skyline. Sant Pere chapel is not visible; it stands outside the settlement and is reached by a historic path bounded by dry-stone walls.

The square opens to the landscape

The parish church was built over an earlier temple and preserves carved fragments from that building on an outside wall. Its Baroque doorway faces Plaça de l’Ajuntament, which is partly arcaded and open to the surroundings. This relationship between rock, houses and square explains the centre better than a list of isolated façades.

A stone-lined path to Sant Pere

The municipal catalogue records a path of about 1,300 metres from near the village to the chapel, flanked by dry-stone walls. Sant Pere was built between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and retains a single nave with diaphragm arches, timber roof and pentagonal apse; the adjoining hospice was added in the seventeenth century.

The chapel is also the destination of the pilgrimage from Catí, documented since 1321. That tradition does not make the building an everyday visitor facility: confirm access to interiors and any conservation work before travelling.

Exposed upland, not an urban stroll
