Morella: how the castle, walls and Gothic town fit together

The panorama reveals Morella’s essential structure: the castle on its rock, the stepped town and the walls around it. This complete view can disguise the distances involved. The climb to the fortress, the basilica, Sant Francesc and the aqueduct are separate stops.

The castle involves a substantial climb

The fortress uses the natural shape of the rock and reaches its parade ground at 1,072 metres above sea level. Municipal visitor information warns of steps at the start, an earth path and more than 90 further steps on the final section; wheelchairs and pushchairs cannot follow the route. It should not be described as an immediately accessible town viewpoint.

The basilica holds details invisible from outside

Santa María la Mayor places the Apostles and Virgins portals on the same façade. Inside, notable features include the spiral choir staircase, the Last Judgement behind the choir, its unusually shallow vault, the high altarpiece and the 1719 organ. The archpriest museum is included with the church visit, subject to worship and opening arrangements.

Sant Francesc and the aqueduct need a current check

The Franciscan convent retains its church, cloister and Sala de Profundis with a fifteenth-century Dance of Death, but the municipal tourism website lists it as closed for works connected with the future Parador. Outside town, the Gothic aqueduct carried water from Font de Vinatxos and is being restored in phases during 2026; its surviving sections do not form one continuous arcade.
