Arriving in the Valencian Community with a health card from another Spanish region proves healthcare cover, but it does not by itself assign a local centre or activate routine access in the Valencian system. For a temporary stay, the health authority says visitors should go to the nearest primary care centre and request inclusion in SIP as a displaced patient.
The procedure does not require municipal registration or a permanent transfer between regional health services. Applicants show a DNI or NIE identity document and the card issued by their home region. The centre registers them in the Population Information System and issues an inclusion document granting public healthcare access during the stay.
An existing SIP number may still need activation
A SIP number is unique and permanent, but a previous stay does not mean that temporary status remains active. Anyone who still has an earlier inclusion document should bring it with their identity document and home-region card. The centre can check and reactivate the record and issue a fresh document where necessary.
Arranging this is particularly useful before seeking a routine appointment, renewing a prescription or needing follow-up during a holiday, study period or family stay. SIP links the person’s identity to the relevant centre, assigned professional and Valencian health applications. It does not create the underlying entitlement, which comes from the person’s existing healthcare cover.
Visitors from abroad follow a different route
A visitor from another EU country must present a European Health Insurance Card or provisional replacement certificate. People covered by Spain’s bilateral agreements with Chile and Andorra use the relevant proof of healthcare entitlement. A centre may issue temporary SIP inclusion in both situations, but the source documents differ.
A Valencian SIP card is itself valid for public healthcare during travel elsewhere in Spain. Travel to the European Union or European Economic Area, however, requires the European Health Insurance Card issued through Spain’s INSS; SIP is not a substitute.
