Castell de Cabres: stone terraces, lost castle and San Lorenzo

The photograph shows one side of Castell de Cabres: stone and rendered houses, tiled roofs, terrace walls and the rocky hill behind. An antenna occupies the centre of the skyline. San Lorenzo Church is not visible, and the castle’s scant remains cannot safely be isolated in this panorama.

The settlement rests on walls and terraces

The image records how buildings adapt to mountainous terrain through terraces, pens and stone boundaries. Not every old wall is a fortification: much belongs to farming or domestic structures. The institutional village route places the church and fountains in the square, outside this view.

Very little survives of the castle

Castellón Tourism describes a simple rock castle with a central tower and wall, now almost completely lost. Only scant wall traces remain on the hill. The local legend of goats carrying burning torches explains the place name in oral tradition, but is not archaeological evidence and cannot identify each visible stone.

San Lorenzo is notable for its painted interior

The parish church has three naves of equal height, an integrated bell tower and an uncommon combination of sail and groin vaults. It retains brightly coloured popular stucco and paintings of evangelists, church fathers and virtues. This heritage is inside the church and absent from the settlement photograph.
