Puebla de Arenoso: the village, reservoir, lost Campos and Arenós castle

The photograph shows Puebla de Arenoso beside the upper end of the reservoir and major slope-stabilisation works. The visible settlement is not a “rebuilt village”. Creation of the reservoir flooded the lower municipality, riverside farmsteads and hamlets; Campos de Arenoso was a different settlement.

The reservoir transformed territory and movement

The dam regulates the Mijares and occupies land in Puebla de Arenoso and Montanejos. Water level varies, so one photograph cannot establish accessible shores, paths or visible remains. A 110-metre pedestrian bridge connects the two banks near Puebla, but its current condition needs checking before relying on the crossing.

The castle occupies a separate hill

Castillo de Arenós, also called La Viñaza, stands on a 770-metre hill beside the reservoir. Its Islamic-medieval remains, Our Lady of the Angels chapel and woodland form a protected municipal natural site. This is not an extension of a dam-side stroll: the ascent has its own route, climb and conditions.

The memory of Campos is not the present town

The loss of Campos de Arenoso and riverside settlements changed population, roads, farmland and religious traditions. A pilgrimage to the Angels chapel was revived by residents of Puebla and descendants of those places. Keeping them distinct avoids claiming a complete reconstruction of Puebla that the sources do not support.
