The photograph does not show the open-air Roman villa. It depicts a mosaic from Benicató displayed at the Museu de Belles Arts de Castelló, as identified by the original image file. The archaeological site lies among orange groves in Nules, while Mascarell is a separate settlement.
Benicató combined a residence with a working estate
The Roman-period rural villa was organised around a square peristyle with a circular pool for collecting rainwater. Seventeen rooms were recorded around it, including residential spaces with mosaics and heating and others used for production and storage, including a press. This layout identifies an estate rather than a small town.
The site is listed as temporarily closed
The regional tourism entry checked on 30 August 2026 says “temporarily closed”. It would therefore be wrong to promise admission or use the museum photograph as evidence of the ruins’ present condition. Tourist Info should confirm reopening, guided visits and access before travelling.
Mascarell retains a complete enclosure
Mascarell stands outside Nules town. Its quadrangular wall has a perimeter of about 620 metres, with four towers centred on the curtain walls and east and west gates; the former moat now serves as an irrigation channel. Homes, a church and town hall stand inside: this is neither a stage set nor an empty castle.
Plan Benicató and Mascarell as separate stops and respect everyday residential life within the walls. This documentary edit checks public sources and the photograph’s identity, but does not verify reopening, mosaic conservation, accessibility or surfaces on site.
