Jérica descends from its castle towards the Palancia valley through streets, gateways and several defensive enclosures. The photograph shows the bell tower, also called Torre de la Alcudia, above the town; it is not the castle keep on the higher ground.
The Mudéjar tower is a separate bell tower
The bell tower has an octagonal plan and three stages. The regional source assigns its base a probable twelfth-century Andalusi defensive origin, while the visible belfry was shaped in the seventeenth century with Mudéjar and Plateresque decoration; the bells occupy the second stage. Its profile and dome distinguish it from the stone towers of the upper enclosure.
The castle has another tower and several gates
The square keep, also called Torre de San Juan, occupies the highest point and is surrounded by surviving wall and turret sections. Descending through town reveals gates such as San Juan, San Joaquín and Santa Ana and Portal de la Sala. They do not form a complete wall or a rebuilt castle, but separate remains incorporated into the streets.
San Roque is not the present Santa Águeda parish church
San Roque chapel, also called Santa Águeda la Vieja, occupies the former main mosque site and preserves phases from the thirteenth century with later Gothic enlargement. The archpriest church of Santa Águeda is a different building on the route. Keeping the two names apart prevents visitors being directed to the wrong place.
