Altura offers several historical landscapes that should not be conflated. Vall de Crist is a ruined charterhouse outside the centre; a museum collection helps interpret its surviving material; gates from the walled enclosure remain in the town; and Cueva Santa is a sanctuary inside a grotto elsewhere in the municipality.
What survives at the charterhouse
Founded in 1385, Vall de Crist became a Carthusian centre of political, economic and spiritual influence. The site contains the main church —the structure in the photograph— and remains of cloisters, refectory, chapter house and former hospice. Its ruined condition means following boundaries and designated routes rather than assuming that every structure is an accessible interior.
The Charterhouse museum collection is in Altura and brings together plans, historic photographs and recovered archaeology including paving, vault bosses and carved reliefs. It is an interpretive complement, not necessarily a room inside each surviving monastery structure.
Two gates survive in the centre
Remains of the wall are absorbed into existing buildings. Portalico or Clemente Gate and Portal de las Parras help trace the old perimeter; topography and party walls explain the enclosure better than a search for one continuous stretch of masonry.
Cueva Santa is a separate destination
The sanctuary occupies a karst grotto about twenty metres deep, reached by stairs. It is an active place of worship with access conditions different from those of the charterhouse. Check opening and accessibility before travelling; this documentary edit does not confirm the present state of steps, services or visits.
