Insurance claims from DANA Adam double to 13,000

The government will add 150 loss adjusters as half the files come from Oliva and claims split almost evenly between homes and vehicles.

Spain’s Insurance Compensation Consortium has received about 13,000 claims for damage caused by DANA Adam, twice the 6,528 recorded four days earlier. Roughly half of the files come from Oliva, and the public insurer will add 150 loss adjusters to speed up assessments.

The figure announced by Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo remains provisional. About 6,000 claims concern homes or owners’ associations and another 6,000 involve vehicles. The final cost is still unknown because damage is still being reported and assessments are incomplete.

Compensation does not wait for a disaster-zone declaration

The Consortium treats flooding as an extraordinary risk when the property was insured and the policy was valid and paid when the storm struck. A declaration of an area seriously affected by a civil-protection emergency may unlock separate public measures, but it is not a condition for the insurance claim to proceed.

For homes and businesses, coverage and limits follow the original policy. For vehicles, compulsory third-party insurance is sufficient for extraordinary flood damage. Business interruption is covered only where the policy includes it and the loss follows direct damage to insured property.

Photographs, invoices and damaged items support the assessment

The policyholder, insurer, agent or broker can report the loss. The Consortium accepts online claims and operates the free 900 222 665 line from 9 am to 6 pm, Monday to Friday. Applicants need policy and identity details, a bank account and, for a vehicle, its make, model, registration number and garage contact details if it has already been moved.

The agency says it will also process reports made after the seven-day period set out in insurance law. Prompt reporting still matters: photographs, estimates, invoices, the premium receipt and, where possible, damaged items help the adjuster establish the loss if urgent cleaning or repairs were unavoidable.

The Consortium pays the beneficiary directly

Once a file is opened, an adjuster assesses eligible damage. The Consortium pays the beneficiary directly by bank transfer. Average payouts from a previous disaster cannot predict an Adam settlement, because each amount depends on proven damage, the insured sum and the policy terms.

The next test will be the pace of assessments and first payments after the announced reinforcement. The municipalities covered by the planned government declaration and the public grants attached to it also remain to be confirmed; those measures will complement insurance rather than automatically replace it.
