Patients do not always have to pay for treatment travel: when Valencia reimburses the journey

Medical referral is essential and reimbursement is restricted to specified treatments, routes and transport; an escort, accommodation or meals may also qualify.

A train ticket, fuel or a hotel night is not reimbursed merely because the journey was made for a medical appointment. The Valencian scheme requires a clinical referral or prescription, and travel outside the patient’s usual area must fall within the cases set out by the health authority.

This distinction excludes trips chosen by the patient, even where the appointment is later authorised. The official procedure warns that when travel is undertaken at the patient’s request, the cost remains theirs. Reimbursement is intended for people referred by the public health system who use non-contracted transport.

The treatments and journeys covered

Within the Valencian Community, the scheme covers interurban travel for rehabilitation, dialysis and cancer treatment, as well as transplant-related care. Children with cancer can also qualify for travel within the same province. For patients awaiting or having received a transplant, the care must relate to that condition or its consequences.

Travel to a centre outside the region may also qualify when a clinician working within the Conselleria has prescribed the care. Ordinary transport includes a private vehicle, bus, train, metro or tram. Taxi use is reserved for clinical circumstances that prevent the use of public transport but do not require an ambulance.

An escort can be included when the patient is under 18 or their clinical condition makes another person’s help essential during the journey. Convenience alone is not enough: the need for assistance must be supported on medical grounds.

The crucial evidence comes from the destination centre

The application requires confirmation from the healthcare centre listing the days on which the patient attended, whether as an outpatient or during admission. The signed application and bank-details form are also required. The form provides for additional evidence concerning emergencies, hospital admission and the transport used.

Applications are open throughout the year, with the official procedure allowing four years from the event. Claims can be filed online with accepted digital identification or through a public registry and are handled by the provincial Health Office in Alicante, Castellón or Valencia. An approved payment is made by bank transfer under the official tariffs, which may not equal the full amount spent.

The reference is Generalitat procedure 1464. This article should be updated if covered treatments, mileage or subsistence rates, required evidence or escort criteria change.
