La Pobla de Benifassà: Fredes, the monastery and the Tinença’s seven villages

Fredes is not La Pobla village

The visible church is a simple single-nave building with a bell tower, dated to 1725 and dedicated to Abdon and Sennen. Fredes also has a fountain and washhouse and is a starting point for routes towards Portell de l’Infern and Ulldecona reservoir. Mountain roads, snow, hunting and trail condition need a current check.

The monastery remains enclosed

Santa María de Benifassà was founded as a Cistercian monastery in the thirteenth century and now houses a community of Carthusian nuns. Published visitor material restricts church access to a period on Thursdays; this must be confirmed and does not permit entry to the cloister, other buildings or the community’s residence.

The park links seven villages, not one route

The historic Tinença comprises La Pobla, Fredes, El Ballestar, El Boixar, Coratxà, Castell de Cabres and Bel. The natural park declared in 2006 covers about 5,000 hectares within a much larger planning area. Its trail network links settlements, ravines and woods, but each itinerary has its own length and difficulty.
