A robot vacuum’s features look appealing on a product page, but one useful check needs only a tape measure: the clearance under your furniture and the space for its dock. A capable machine may still be unable to reach the area you most want cleaned.
Measure the lowest point under the sofa or bed, including crossbars and hanging fabric. Compare it with the model’s full height. A very tight fit is not a reason to assume it will travel in and out reliably.
The dock needs room too
A self-emptying station needs space of its own and access to remove the bag or open the lid. Check the manufacturer’s clearance requirements around the station. Fitting it into a corner does not necessarily leave enough room for the robot to manoeuvre.
Consider the power socket and the route through your home. Loose cables, chair legs and changes in floor level are worth reviewing before deciding which features matter.
Maintenance belongs in the budget
Compare the cost and availability of filters, brushes and, where applicable, dock bags. iRobot’s maintenance instructions, for example, include cleaning brushes and charging contacts. Automating vacuuming does not remove the need to look after the machine.
If you have two candidates, write down their dimensions and consumables alongside the purchase price. That can be a more useful comparison than choosing solely by a suction figure or the length of an app’s feature list.
