“With GPS” may mean that the watch calculates its own position or borrows the phone’s location. A recorded route also depends on antenna, constellations, frequency, software and surroundings. Independence, accuracy, battery, navigation and export should therefore be checked separately.
Built-in or connected GPS
Built-in positioning allows the phone to stay behind but consumes more watch battery. Connected GPS may suit walks when the phone is present, yet depends on permissions, the app and a stable link. Check which mode each activity uses and whether the watch clearly confirms a position fix before starting.
Surroundings change accuracy
Buildings, bridges, trees, indoor use, satellite geometry and receiver design affect the result, according to GPS.gov. A displaced line does not automatically indicate a satellite fault. Compare repeated recordings on a known route with the watch properly fitted and its software current.
Constellations and dual frequency
GPS is one satellite constellation; watches may combine others. Additional systems can improve availability, but antenna and algorithms still matter. Dual-frequency reception may help around reflected signals and may use more power. Confirm supported combinations, whether selection is automatic and measured battery life in the exact mode you intend to use.
Distance, pace and elevation
The watch derives distance and pace from successive positions and filtering. Bends, tunnels and pauses complicate the calculation. Elevation may come from satellites or a barometer; the latter needs calibration and responds to atmospheric pressure. Runners should distinguish instant pace from lap pace. Mountain users should cross-check route and altitude with appropriate sources.
Breadcrumbs, routes and maps
Following a line is not the same as viewing a street or topographic map. Distinguish back-to-start guidance, breadcrumb track, turn prompts, offline maps and recalculation. Test route import, map coverage and off-route behaviour. A watch does not replace planning, reserve power or appropriate safety equipment in remote areas.
Battery for a long activity
Look for hours in the exact satellite mode with screen, music and navigation settings stated. Leave margin for cold weather, battery age and long stops. Extended modes may reduce sampling frequency and smooth the track. Decide whether accuracy, duration or a balance is the priority, and only charge during recording if the maker supports it.
Export and ecosystem
Confirm activity formats, third-party synchronisation, route import and access without a subscription. A valuable history should be downloadable. Check whether later distance or elevation corrections preserve original data. Social leaderboards and a provider account are not substitutes for your own export.
Test before keeping it
- Wait for a confirmed position.
- Record the same measured route twice.
- Include trees and buildings.
- Compare battery consumption.
- Export and inspect the activity file.
- Test return guidance without staring at the display.
