A multifunction device combines printing, copying and scanning, but each verb has levels. It may print duplex without scanning both sides, accept phone jobs while requiring cloud access, or include a document feeder without duplex detection. Turn every need into a verifiable test.

Wi‑Fi is not a complete specification
Check 2.4 and 5 GHz support, setup without WPS, reconnection after router changes and Ethernet availability. Guest networks may isolate devices and prevent discovery. If printing must work when internet access fails, confirm the workflow operates locally.
Scanner resolution is not enough
Documents need reliable feeding, supported size, duplex, PDF formats and OCR. OCR creates searchable text but may depend on software, an account or operating system. For photographs, inspect bit depth, usable glass area and image quality; fragile originals do not belong in an ADF.
Secure, maintainable setup
- Update firmware through the official channel.
- Replace default administration passwords.
- Disable remote services you do not use.
- Reserve a stable router address if that improves discovery.
- Learn how to erase jobs, contacts and credentials before disposal.
Mobile printing checks
Review native phone support, maker app, requested permissions and available paper sizes. A simple photo-print app may not expose quality controls or scan-to-folder. Confirm through documentation rather than a box logo alone.
Supplies and operational lock-in
Confirm box contents, starter capacity, behaviour when one colour runs out, and separately replaced drum, waste container or printhead. For subscriptions compare price, unused pages, required connection, cancellation and cartridge behaviour afterwards.
Installation test
- There is space to open scanner, ADF and trays.
- The router covers the chosen position.
- All operating systems remain supported.
- Duplex works for print and, when needed, scan.
- Supplies and parts have clear references.
- USB or Ethernet provides backup if required.

Decide who can change settings, install firmware and view scanned documents. A family may only need clear device names and a stable local address; a small office may also need user codes, address-book control or restricted colour printing. Check whether saved scan destinations expose passwords and whether jobs remain visible in history. Document the setup after installation: network name, administrator route, supply references and the method for reconnecting after a router change. This makes the device easier to maintain without weakening account or network security.
