A HEPA purifier circulating air in a room

HEPA describes a particle-filter type, not device airflow, sealing, noise or gas performance. The EPA explains that a HEPA filter can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of 0.3 μm particles passing through it. That does not mean all room air becomes clean instantly.

Filter and device are separate levels

Data What it describes What it does not prove
HEPA Particle-filter media efficiency. Device airflow or absence of bypass.
CADR Clean-air delivery for a particle and speed. Gas removal or quiet operation.
Suggested area Estimate under assumed ceiling and air changes. Identical performance in every room.
Activated carbon Medium that may adsorb certain gases. Unlimited capacity or action on every compound.

Find particle-specific CADR

Dust, pollen and smoke may have different CADR values. Use the relevant one and do not mix cfm and m³/h without conversion. Check whether the value is at maximum speed. When only area is stated, find ceiling height, assumed air changes and test method.

Sealing and bypass

Air going around a filter does not receive its efficiency. Inspect fit, seals, cover closure and exact replacement availability. A generic filter that physically fits may differ in resistance, seal or media. Never operate without required filters or obstruct openings.

Carbon for odours and gases

HEPA is not designed for gases. Carbon needs adequate material and contact; life depends on concentration and humidity. Seek media quantity where available and avoid total-removal promises. For a leak, combustion or intense source, remove the source and ventilate safely rather than relying on a purifier.

Placement and operation

  1. Use it in the occupied room, not a distant hallway.
  2. Leave specified clearance around intake and outlet.
  3. Close doors and windows only when consistent with safe ventilation.
  4. Choose a sustainable speed and increase it temporarily when needed.
  5. Keep curtains and furniture away from airflow.

Safe maintenance

Follow the manual when removing loaded filters, clean the prefilter as directed and never wash HEPA media unless explicitly washable. Record date, approximate hours and conditions. Reset the indicator only after replacement.

Eight rejection questions

  • Is CADR published with speed?
  • Are area, ceiling and air changes stated?
  • Can you tolerate noise at the required speed?
  • Are referenced, priced filters available?
  • Is the gas medium explained?
  • Can ionisation be disabled?
  • Is ozone-emission information available?
  • Does the guarantee impose supply conditions?

Compare HEPA air purifiers

The link opens results, not a ranking or guaranteed offer. Filter by CADR, noise, filter cost, carbon and dimensions.

Open the HEPA purifier comparison

To decide whether filtration is the right first action, read the general air-purifier guide.

Keep a simple operating record

For the first month, note the normal fan setting, hours used, unusual pollution events and any change in noise or airflow. This will not measure health outcomes or filter efficiency, but it helps reveal whether the advertised maximum mode is actually sustainable and when maintenance changes performance. If the unit has an app, treat its sensor trend as information from that device rather than a calibrated assessment of the entire home. Do not delay source control or professional investigation because an indicator remains green.

Sources and warning

Criteria refer to the EPA home guide and CARB ozone information. Verify model documentation. Symptoms or hazardous contamination require appropriate professionals and authorities.
