A power bank should not be chosen by its largest mAh number alone. Consider the device, required recharges, input and output power, ports, cable, weight and safety. A light emergency unit and a laptop-oriented battery solve different problems.

mAh and Wh describe different things
mAh is commonly stated at the internal cell voltage and does not directly equal the mAh delivered at another voltage. Wh expresses energy: Wh = V × Ah. Conversion, cable, temperature and electronics create losses, so delivered capacity is below the nominal number. Treat exact recharge counts without a method cautiously.
Power is negotiated
Compatible devices negotiate a power profile. Maximum output requires the bank, port, cable and receiving device to share the required mode. USB‑C describes a connector and does not alone promise Power Delivery. The USB-IF Power Delivery information explains the system; check both ends.
Read each port separately
One port may support input and output while another is output-only. Total power often changes when several devices connect, so find a combination table rather than adding individual maxima. Check pass-through operation and whether it lowers output or increases heat.
The cable is part of the system
A physically compatible cable can limit current or power. Use identified cables rated for the intended output, and inspect included cable length and capability. Test a laptop setup before travel. Stop using bent connectors, loose plugs or damaged cables.
Recharge time for the bank
Large capacity with a slow input can require many hours. Check maximum input and the wall charger required, which is often not included. Final charging may slow to protect the cells. Confirm that an overnight window is sufficient and do not assume “fast charging” applies equally to input and output.
Safety and care
- Stop using swollen, damaged, wet or unusually hot batteries.
- Keep them out of hot cars and uncovered while charging.
- Protect ports from keys and metal objects.
- Use the local battery recycling route.
- Check recalls and buy from an identifiable seller.
Air travel
Rules depend on authority and airline. The FAA requires power banks in carry-on baggage, protected from damage and short circuit, and publishes Wh limits. Always check the rules for your route and carrier; remove the bank if a cabin bag is gate-checked.
