Xert: the old town beneath Les Moles de Xert

Xert stands below flat-topped reliefs that define much of its landscape. The photograph shows Les Moles de Xert and a quarry face on the slope, not the urban centre. Visiting the old town and heading into the mountains involve different scales and preparation.

The old town occupies the upper streets

Narrow streets and small squares lead to the old Assumption church. Building began in the late thirteenth century and alterations followed in the seventeenth; it retains a fifteenth-century side doorway, a nave with chapels and rib vaulting. Near the church square, remnants of the former fortification survive within houses rather than as a complete wall.

The palace represents a different period

Palau dels Comtes de Pestagua is associated with a branch of the Feliu family established in Xert in the seventeenth century. The building has two distinguishable sections and should not be confused with the former town hall or church. Confirm its use and any interior access locally; a heritage listing does not mean permanent opening.

Les Moles are mountain-activity terrain

The table-like form of Les Moles results from alternating rock layers of different hardness. Mola Redona, Mola Llarga and Mola Murada feature in routes across the municipality, with an archaeological site on the latter. The regional tourism listing mentions climbing, a via ferrata and caving, none of which should be treated as an ordinary walk without equipment or experience.

Check route, ascent, regulation, weather and the operator responsible before choosing an activity. Anroig and La Barcella are other settlements or places in the municipality, not adjacent stops on the town walk.
