Vila-real: Sant Pasqual Basilica, Plaça de la Vila and the Termet

The photograph shows the facade of Sant Pasqual Basilica in Vila-real, flanked by its two bell towers. The sanctuary was built on the site of the former Mare de Déu del Roser chapel and contains spaces associated with the city’s patron saint. The sanctuary combines basilica, chapel and museum

The Royal Chapel and Sant Pasqual’s tomb opened in 1992, the fourth centenary of his death, and are by local artist Vicente Llorens Poy. The complex also incorporates the saint’s former cell and the sanctuary museum. Bells, carillon, worship and museum spaces may each operate under different access arrangements.

Plaça de la Vila retains the medieval scale

The arcaded square locates the historic centre, while sections of the thirteenth-century wall survive at places such as Casa de l’Oli and Torre Motxa. The eighteenth-century, Neoclassical archpriest’s church of Sant Jaume is another central landmark. A town walk works best when these buildings’ different periods and functions remain clear.

The Termet lies outside the centre beside the Millars

Mare de Déu de Gràcia Chapel stands in the Termet on the bank of the River Millars, with origins extending back to the sixteenth century. The area links religious heritage, vegetation and the Calduch Botanical Route within the protected landscape around the Millars estuary. Travel from the city centre needs planning as a separate part of the visit.
