Finestrat guide: old town, Puig Campana and the Cala

Finestrat occupies three places that are not side by side: the hillside old town, Font del Molí and Puig Campana, and Cala de Finestrat on the coast. A useful plan must account for that separation. Treating them as a single walk creates an unrealistic itinerary; choose one main area or allow for travel between them.

Old town on the former castle hill

The traditional centre climbs the slope once occupied by the Muslim castle. Narrow streets, stepped houses and coloured façades make more sense on a slow walk uphill. Landmarks include the Church of Sant Bertomeu and the Chapel of the Santíssim Crist del Remei. Devotional ceramic panels along the streets are a local feature rather than generic decoration.

The Archaeological and Ethnological Museum occupies a nineteenth-century farmhouse and provides material context for local history. Municipal opening times can change, so verify access before building the day around an interior visit.

Font del Molí: the transition to the mountain

Font del Molí marks the move from the town towards mountain routes. It is a useful orientation point, but it does not make an outing on Puig Campana an urban stroll. Check trail markings, weather, daylight, water and the group’s fitness before setting out.

PR-CV 289 circles Puig Campana from Font del Molí. The ascent to the summit is associated with PR-CV 14 and calls for a different level of effort and technical judgement. They should not be described as equivalent options or combined casually. The official Puig Campana circuit sheet helps identify the route, but ground conditions and alerts still need a same-day check.

Cala de Finestrat

The Cala is the municipality’s only beach: an urban bay about 270 metres long between Punta de la Barreta and Xoriguer. Its services and atmosphere differ markedly from the hillside town. Visual proximity to Benidorm does not make facilities in the neighbouring municipality part of Finestrat. In the busiest season, check transport, parking and currently available services.

Three realistic plans

• Heritage: explore the old town, church, chapel and museum if open.
• Mountain: prepare a route from Font del Molí and give it the full time required; the beach need not be an add-on.
• Town and coast: visit the centre in the morning, then travel to the Cala with the transfer time included.

Food and nearby places
