Buying a wheelchair, orthosis or external prosthesis may qualify for reimbursement where the patient held the relevant healthcare entitlement and personally met a cost that should have been funded. This is not a general refund for any self-selected product.
Prescription comes first
The equipment must be prescribed by an authorised professional and fall within the applicable catalogue. The prescription specifies the type, required features and any replacement period. Buying first and seeking retrospective approval can place the expense outside the scheme.
Evidence for the claim
The Generalitat procedure requires identity and healthcare entitlement, prescription, invoice and proof of payment, plus bank details where needed. The invoice must identify the product and supplier; an estimate or vague receipt is not equivalent.
Sanidad checks both eligibility and the fundable amount. The retail price alone does not set reimbursement. A representative must also prove authority to act.
Before buying
Ask the prescribing unit how the item should be supplied and whether the patient contributes. Some products are obtained through authorised providers without paying the full cost upfront. Reimbursement is chiefly relevant where a justified circumstance has already left the patient bearing the expense.
