Vall de Almonacid: Almonecir Castle, church and walking route

The fortress occupies a central promontory

Castellón’s tourism portal describes a Muslim complex built in the early 12th century for military purposes and abandoned in the 16th. Its irregular enclosure retains a rectangular keep with one curved side, four levels, battlements and arrow slits. It is protected as a Site of Cultural Interest.

Immaculate Conception Church stands in the square

The Baroque church has a single nave divided into four bays. The provincial record states that it contains the Gothic altarpiece of San Valero, formerly in Segorbe Cathedral’s cloister and donated after a fire. Church and castle have separate approaches.

The natural park publishes a castle itinerary

Sierra de Espadán’s official map lists a 5.2-kilometre circular route with 160 metres of cumulative ascent and an estimated duration of one and a half hours. These figures are indicative; check current signs, terrain, weather risk and restrictions.
