Traditional town centre and local architecture in Orcheta, Alicante province

Orcheta has three scales that need separate planning: a compact historic centre, the climb to Castellet dels Moros, and paths associated with River Sella and Amadorio Reservoir. The previous guide offered unnamed springs and viewpoints; this version identifies places, dates and the practical limits of each route.

Doctor Ferrándiz Square and traditional centre

Doctor Ferrándiz Square retains traditional urban houses and provides an orientation point. From here, connect Sant Jaume Apòstol Parish Church, the public washhouse and streets largely shaped during the nineteenth century. The old boundary cross and cemetery help explain how the settlement expanded beyond the square.

Sant Jaume Church and Sant Tomàs Chapel

The church was built between 1759 and 1761 and consecrated in 1764. It is distinct from Sant Tomàs Chapel, built in 1665 beside the cemetery at the end of the traditional Calvary route. The chapel overlooks the old centre from a small rise. Check local opening information rather than assuming either interior is continuously accessible.

Castellet dels Moros

Orcheta Castle, also called Castellet dels Moros, preserves remains of a twelfth- to thirteenth-century fortification. Regional tourism information estimates roughly a forty-five-minute walk from the town and describes it as having little difficulty. It is nevertheless a ruined hilltop site: verify the route, carry water and wear suitable shoes, avoiding strong heat or unstable ground.

The purpose of the climb is to read the valley and routes towards the coast. Do not expect complete towers or furnished interiors; the remaining fabric, position and defensive landscape provide the meaning.

River Sella, bridge, mills and l’Arquet

The bridge over River Sella is a specific local landmark. Former flour mills are associated with the river corridor. L’Arquet aqueduct lies in the Teular area, while El Pla Chapel occupies another part of the municipality. These are not stations on one fully signposted walk, so check public paths and distances before linking them.

Amadorio Reservoir

The reservoir spans Orcheta and Villajoyosa. Built in 1949, its historical capacity is about 12.6 million cubic metres. It is water infrastructure, landscape and habitat, not an inland beach. Water level, access and restrictions change; a viewpoint does not mean the entire shore is walkable or that every visible track is public.

PR-CV 353 and green routes

PR-CV 353 provides a structure for a hiking outing, while local green routes recover traditional tracks and livestock paths. Municipal material names l’Estret gorge, Racó de Cortés, Romera cave, Serra dels Castellets and the Amadorio area. Select one itinerary, download its topographic guide and verify markings rather than attempting the entire list in a short walk.

Access and water safety

The river corridor and reservoir are managed water environments. Do not enter channels, cross barriers or treat low water as permission to walk on exposed reservoir ground. After rain, flow and track conditions can change quickly. For cycling or walking, confirm the permitted route and turning point before departure, especially when a visible service road is not marked as a public trail.

Two realistic plans

  • Heritage: Ferrándiz Square, church, washhouse, Calvary and Sant Tomàs Chapel.
  • Landscape: choose either Castellet dels Moros or a marked section towards Amadorio.

Food and nearby towns

The municipal guide names putxero amb tarongetes, coques al forn and lloseta; check availability. Polop adds a castle and urban water heritage, Relleu a historic dam and walkway, and Sella hydraulic heritage and Aitana.
