Tavernes de la Valldigna: making sense of Bolomor and the watchtower

Why Bolomor’s prehistoric hearths matter, why a walk is not permission to enter the excavation, and what the coastal watchtower reveals.

Bolomor: look for the evidence of fire

Cova del Bolomor lies in its namesake ravine, south of the Valldigna valley in the foothills of Mondúver. The Prehistory Museum highlights the sequence of preserved prehistoric hearths. Their value lies in studying the use of fire over an extended period, not simply in looking inside a cave.

Tavernes’ tourism portal separates the site’s history, guided visits and the walk through its surroundings. Keep that distinction when booking: reaching the vicinity does not mean entering the excavation or receiving an archaeological explanation. Use the specific visitor information rather than treating a hiking route as permission to enter.

The tower tells a much later story

The Torre de Guaita formed part of the sixteenth-century coastal watch system. Smoke by day and fire at night transmitted warnings. Its circular plan and tapering shape belong to that defensive function; the tower is not another part of Bolomor’s prehistoric site.

The tower’s setting in Els Marenys connects its history with the coast. Looking at the exterior and entering the building are different experiences: this guide does not promise access to the top or specify opening hours.

Choose the visit that matters to you

If archaeology is your priority, organise a guided explanation of Bolomor and plan other activities around its availability. If you prefer outdoor heritage near the coast, the tower provides a different focus. This is our editorial suggestion, not a timed itinerary. The lead photograph shows the town hall and its square, not the cave.
