Algemesí: Porta de l’Aire, Sant Jaume Basilica and festival museum

Porta de l’Aire offers another reading of the basilica

The basilica occupies one side of Plaça Major and combines the fifteenth-century old church, the new church begun in 1550, the abbey house and the former cemetery area. At the rear, Porta de l’Aire leads to a small cloister with ceramic panels. This detail image does not replace the Renaissance portal, bell tower or interior when interpreting the whole building.

The museum preserves context throughout the year

Museu Valencià de la Festa occupies the former Dominican convent of Sant Vicent, a Renaissance building constructed in 1590. Its displays document the history, dress and music of the Mare de Déu de la Salut festival alongside other local collections. Museum access depends on opening; a visit is not the same as attending a procession.

The festival is living heritage, not a continuous show

The celebration takes place on 7 and 8 September and was inscribed by UNESCO in 2011. Processions between the basilica and Capella de la Troballa combine religious theatre, music, dances and human towers sustained by community participation. Outside those dates, its heritage can be explored in buildings and the museum, but it is not performed permanently.
