Suera: the village, Castro walk and Mauz castle

The photograph shows Suera among the mountains, not the castle; the fortress, fountains and Suera Alta require a separate outing.

The photograph is a panorama of Suera enclosed by the Serra d’Espadà slopes; Mauz castle is not visible. The present village, network of springs and hilltop fortress occupy separate places, so a short town walk needs distinguishing from a mountain outing.

The village retains the imprint of Suera Baixa

Narrow streets and white façades preserve part of a layout with Islamic origins. The eighteenth-century Church of Our Lady of the Assumption stands out in the panorama and has a ceramic mural on its façade. Late nineteenth-century devotional tile panels and the approach to Calvary provide specific details for a short walk through town.

The Castro walk links springs and abandoned settlements

From the edge of town, the route towards Castro passes springs including Bocamina, els Ullals and Font de Castro; the provincial listing describes the last as having sixteen spouts and a recreation area. The path enters pine and cork-oak woodland and approaches the remains of Suera Alta. Flow, drinking-water status, shade and facilities cannot be assumed constant.

The castle requires a mountain route

Suera castle, known as Mauz in the Islamic period, is a twelfth-century fortress on the summit of Suera Alta hill at 582 metres. Large wall sections and the lower part of its main tower survive; it was associated with four Islamic farmsteads whose population ultimately concentrated in the present village. It is neither visible in the main photograph nor reached by a paved continuation of the town centre.

Before setting out, check weather, fire risk, restrictions, signs and path condition; remain on designated trails and do not light fires. This documentary edit does not verify springs, surfaces, ruins or access safety on site.
