The photograph shows the whole rock from the beach: walls at its base, stepped houses and the castle on the summit. Not every visible wall belongs to the Templar castle. The urban fortification added defences and entrances in later periods.

The Templar castle became a papal residence

The Templars built the fortress in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries over earlier structures. In the fifteenth century it became the residence of Benedict XIII, Papa Luna, and his successor Clement VIII. Church, conclave hall, library, domestic rooms and terraces form a ticketed monument.

The gateways do not belong to one building campaign

Portal Fosc passes through the Renaissance wall promoted by Philip II and remained the principal land entrance until the eighteenth century. Portal de Sant Pere faces the harbour, while Santa María gate occupies lower ground. Identifying each one prevents “the walls” becoming a generic stop without orientation.

Bufador and the Artillery Park work differently

Bufador is a natural tunnel through the rock connected to the sea; in storms it can eject water violently and is not an entrance passage. The Artillery Park links medieval and Renaissance wall sections through gardens and gun positions. Both are outside the castle rooms and can operate under different conditions.

Steep streets, cobbles, stairs, capacity and wind require a current check. This documentary edit does not certify accessibility, storm safety, gateway opening or availability of every room through an on-site inspection.
