Alfondeguilla occupies a narrow valley on the southern side of the Sierra de Espadán. Its heritage divides between water infrastructure close to the settlement and mountain sites such as Castro Castle and its snow store. These are not three urban stops: reaching the castle involves a hike with substantial ascent.
Castro is a ruined fortress
The castle stands on a spur between ravines and now preserves mainly stretches of wall. Provincial sources distinguish the albacar, a fortified refuge for people and livestock, from the main enclosure; the keep was demolished in 1938. The photograph conveys both the abrupt setting and the fragmentary condition of the site.
The circular route published by the Provincial Tourism Board starts in Alfondeguilla, passes the castle and covers just over ten kilometres with 653 metres of ascent. This is a planning reference, not a guarantee of present conditions: check the track, waymarking, weather and your fitness before setting out.
The snow store needs a separate approach
Nevera de Castro was used to store snow and ice. Its tourism listing places it about seven and a half kilometres from the village and describes access by tracks in mountain terrain. Do not add it automatically to the castle route without checking the chosen line and available time.
Water infrastructure near the village
Pont de l’Aigua crosses the Belcaire ravine on six arches supporting a channel still associated with irrigation. Together with L’Arquet, it explains how water was carried across difficult ground. This nearby circuit is a proportionate alternative when the climb to Castro is unsuitable.
