Relleu is more than its elevated walkway: the town retains steep narrow streets, a museum, church, chapel and castle, while the historic dam lies in a gorge outside the centre. The controlled walkway and the hiking route from town have different lengths and demands.

Town centre, church and museum

Plaza del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús forms the social centre. Sant Jaume Apòstol Church was first built in the seventeenth century and reconstructed through to 1931. The Ethnological-Historical Museum occupies the nineteenth-century former town hall and brings together donated objects, archaeological finds, documents and photographs. Check opening before relying on an interior visit.

Sant Albert Chapel

Camí del Calvari climbs from the centre to Sant Albert Chapel, which has more than three centuries of history. The ascent is short compared with the municipality’s hiking routes, but it still involves gradient and exposure. Its view explains the valley and mountain enclosure without resorting to an unnamed “natural viewpoint”.

Relleu Castle

Masonry and rammed-earth ruins occupy the dominant hill. The fortress had an almost semicircular plan; sections of wall and several towers survive, including the square main tower. This is a ruin rather than a reconstructed castle: respect closures, do not climb on masonry and verify access.

A dam with its own history

The reservoir project began in the seventeenth century to regulate water for Villajoyosa. Philip IV granted the construction privilege in 1653, and the work was completed under Charles III. The dam sits in the narrow River Amadorio gorge. It is distinct from the modern Amadorio Reservoir and is not a swimming area.

The walkway: short route, controlled access

The wooden platform is fixed to the gorge wall. The visitor section is about 850 metres return, rises close to 60 metres above the ground in places and includes two panoramic viewpoints with transparent floors. Admission and access control apply, so verify hours, availability and current conditions.

No climbing technique is required, but that does not remove exposure, vertigo, heat or the need to supervise children. Follow staff instructions and abandon the plan if official closure or conditions make it unsuitable.

The route from town is not 850 metres

A circular option of roughly 10 kilometres begins in Relleu, initially marked near the town hall with green and white signs. It passes weirs, irrigation channels, aqueducts and lime kilns before reaching the reservoir. Do not confuse it with the walkway section near the car park: it needs more time, water and preparation.
