International travel vaccines should be discussed before the suitcase is packed

Valencian health authorities recommend booking four to eight weeks ahead through the local hospital service or a Foreign Health centre.

Buying tickets before checking vaccination needs can leave too little time to complete protection. Valencian health authorities recommend a consultation four to eight weeks before departure, and earlier for long stays or employment abroad.

Residents can book with the Foreign Health centres in Alicante, Castellón and Valencia or with the international vaccination service assigned to their health department. The hospital network brings advice closer to home, but telephone numbers, email addresses and opening times change and should be checked in the official directory before travelling to a centre.

Advice depends on the itinerary, not only the country

The consultation considers the cities and regions visited, duration, season, accommodation, activities, stopovers and individual health. Two people heading to the same country may need different measures. Travellers should bring a complete itinerary and any available vaccination history or certificates.

Not every recommendation is a vaccine. Staff may advise malaria prevention, mosquito precautions, food and water safety or a tailored medical kit. Nor is every travel vaccine compulsory: some are recommended for individual risk, while others may be required by a country or after passage through a defined area.

Only authorised centres issue the international certificate

Where a vaccine covered by the International Health Regulations requires proof, an authorised centre records it in the relevant certificate. An ordinary vaccination card, prescription or invoice does not automatically replace that document. Any fee and current conditions should be confirmed when the appointment is booked.

Travellers leaving in under four weeks should still seek advice: the centre can decide which schedules remain possible and what alternative protection is appropriate. Medical advice does not replace border rules, so official entry requirements and destination alerts must also be checked.
