Rain closes roads in Orihuela Costa as Alicante logs 30 incidents

The Vega Baja and Marina Alta accounted for 27 emergency responses logged since Wednesday, mostly pumping-outs, leaks and traffic disruption.

Intense rain forced temporary road closures in Orihuela Costa on Saturday as the regional Emergency Coordination Centre raised its count to 30 weather-related incidents across Alicante province since Wednesday night. The Vega Baja accounted for 14 responses and the Marina Alta for 13, meaning the two districts together represented nine out of every ten calls logged by 10.30 am.

The most common problems involved pumping out water, leaks, traffic disruption and property damage, according to the emergency-service figures reported by Europa Press. The number refers to responses handled, not to people affected or homes flooded, and remained open to reports received after the cut-off time.

On the Orihuela coast, local police reported closures at Paseo del Mar, Calle Gerardo Rueda, the San Miguel road, Rambla de Nacimiento, Monte Zenia, Avenida del Carmen, La Florida, Calle Paraná and Avenida California. The restrictions were imposed because water had accumulated. Their appearance on the list does not establish that every location remained closed at the end of the day.

An uneven event across the province

The concentration of 27 responses in the Vega Baja and Marina Alta shows how localised the event was. In Orihuela Costa, police information reported by Vega Baja Digital also described numerous calls for help and a small palm-tree fire after a lightning strike. Firefighters attended and the rain slowed the spread; the incident neither changes the provincial total nor supports assumptions about damage elsewhere.

The sequence began with preventive measures before the downpours. Orihuela City Council had suspended Wednesday classes at schools on the coast, markets and municipal outdoor activities because of an orange weather warning. That decision belonged to the alert phase; Saturday’s closures were a direct consequence for local travel.

AEMET adjusted its warnings during the day as the expected intensity changed. A lower warning level or the expiry of a weather alert does not, by itself, mean that a road has reopened: local restrictions depend on accumulated water and municipal crews inspecting each location.

The next verifiable reference point will be the final emergency-service tally and a local police update confirming that access roads are back to normal. Until then, drivers should observe barriers and on-site signs, particularly around watercourses and low-lying areas, and use the 112 number only for emergencies.
