Valencia has activated the orange alert for rain and storms, with accumulations of 40 millimeters in an hour and the possibility of exceeding 80 millimeters in two or three hours. This situation is expected between 4:00 PM and midnight, especially in the inland areas and the pre-coastal area, where it is expected that the storms may be accompanied by hail up to 4 centimeters. The Aemet has anticipated strong storms and hail, which has led the Conselleria of Emergencies and Interior to take preventive measures.
The CCE has sent the alert bulletin to the municipalities and organizations involved in emergencies, recommending that citizens take extreme precautions and follow self-protection advice. The city has implemented preventive measures, including the suspension of activities in flood-prone areas and the closure of parks and gardens. The autonomous secretary of Emergencies and Interior, Fernando Lasheras, has highlighted the importance of following these recommendations and self-protection advice, as well as paying attention to official information and updates.
The City Council of Valencia has unified municipal actions in a single document, which beforehand determines which measures correspond to each service, the time when they must be activated, the coordination mechanisms, the information that must be transmitted, and the recommendations for prevention and self-protection. This protocol seeks to anticipate, gain time and avoid improvisations, ensuring that both municipal services and citizens know what to do in case of emergency.
Valencia has experienced a high frequency of adverse weather episodes, with 38 episodes in a year, which equates to 69 days under some type of alert. This means that the city has been affected by some weather warning practically one in five days. Among the episodes include 26 days with rain and storm alert, 24 for wind and coastal phenomena, and 21 days for high temperatures. This situation has led the city council to strengthen municipal preparation and coordination.
