Castellón’s new General Hospital cleared for tender worth over €474 million

The existing hospital is to keep treating patients during construction. The proposed contract runs for five years, with land occupation still pending.

The Valencian government has authorised a construction contract worth more than €474 million for Castellón’s new General University Hospital. Friday’s decision, on 11 September, paves the way for a tender to build beside the existing hospital, which is to continue treating patients throughout construction.

The official announcement says the tender will follow shortly and sets a contract duration of 60 months. Approval gives the health department permission to proceed with procurement; it does not award the work to a builder or mark the start of construction.

Nor does the five-year term establish September 2031 as an opening date: it cannot simply be counted from Friday’s decision.

For people using the General Hospital, the project’s immediate commitment is to keep care running. The health department plans to maintain the existing hospital’s activity during construction, then refurbish it and adjoining facilities in later phases. À Punt also reports this sequence. The announcement does not set out how access or internal service moves will be managed at each stage.

The enlarged site would add a 31,614-square-metre plot to the 35,587 square metres occupied by the current hospital. Together, they amount to 67,201 square metres, an 88.8% increase in land area. These figures describe plots of land; they do not mean that beds, staff or available appointments will double.

The more than 140,000 square metres announced for the new hospital measure floor space instead. The decision links the scheme to the health district’s service plan, but gives no breakdown of staffing or capacity by specialty against which to assess its effect on patient care.

Land acquisition has a nearer milestone. Radio Castellón reports that 18 September is the date for payment and occupation records to be drawn up with owners of the outstanding land.

Securing that land and publishing the tender documents will mark the project’s progress towards construction. The health department has yet to set out the detailed conditions for carrying out the work beside a hospital that remains in service.
