Castellón ends August 41% short of normal rainfall despite torrential storms

AEMET’s monthly figures reveal a dry province during a record-hot August across the region. Bejís and Castellfort were highly localised exceptions.

August’s torrential storms failed to make up for the lack of rain across Castellón province. AEMET’s assessment, released on 3 September, puts provincial rainfall 41% below normal, despite exceptional downpours in a few inland locations. The figures show how a severe storm in one town can occur during a dry month for the wider province.

The Castelló de la Plana-Almassora weather station recorded 7.2 millimetres of rain over the month, against an August average of 20.2 for 1991–2020. Segorbe received 2.6 millimetres and Atzeneta del Maestrat just 0.5. These are individual station readings; the provincial shortfall comes from the agency’s assessment across the territory.

Bejís and Castellfort tell a different story. The automatic station at Bejís recorded 189.8 millimetres during August, while Castellfort received 155.9. AEMET describes rainfall concentrated in short bursts and small areas, rather than spread evenly across the province.

The regional average conceals Castellón’s shortfall

Across the Comunitat Valenciana, August rainfall was close to normal, at 9% above the climate reference. Valencia province finished 54% above its average and Alicante 8% above. The regional figure does not describe conditions in Castellón, nor can it establish the state of the province’s reservoirs or water reserves.

The lack of rain coincided with the region’s hottest August on record, a milestone also reported by Europa Press. Castelló-Almassora recorded a monthly mean temperature of 28.5°C, 2.2 degrees above its reference average; Morella had the same departure from normal. These are monthly averages, not afternoon peak temperatures.

The report is a preliminary assessment, with figures still subject to validation. September’s rainfall report will show whether subsequent rain narrows the shortfall. August’s figures alone cannot tell residents what the autumn will bring.
