Canet de Berenguer: the inland lighthouse and the coastal dunes

Why the lighthouse stands inland, how the dunes support the beach and which historic interiors should not be assumed open to visitors.

Understand the lighthouse from the land

Canet’s lighthouse was first lit in 1904. Its inland position is not a mapping mistake: the municipal tourism account explains that firmer ground was needed. The 30-metre tower connects to a building with a courtyard and accommodation originally used by the lighthouse keeper.

The dunes are not a shortcut

The dune belt stretches between Puerto Siles and the boundary with Sagunt. Vegetation helps hold the sand, and the system stores sediment for the beach. Looking from the designated access points is a way to understand this coast without trampling plants or creating new paths.

Check before planning an indoor visit

The municipal heritage page consulted says the lighthouse interior and Ethnological Museum are not open to the public; it also identifies the Berenguer manor house as private property. We therefore do not suggest these as three consecutive indoor visits. Reconfirm arrangements if a special opening is announced.

For a coastal outing, our selection is the walk beside the dunes and the lighthouse exterior. Visitors interested in urban heritage can consider the old town separately. We do not give the combined outing a fixed duration: that depends on arrival arrangements and any time spent on the beach. Bathing services and lifeguard provision require a separate check for the actual date and season; they are not guaranteed by this guide.
