The best cabin case is not the one claiming the most litres. It must fit the applicable allowance, leave useful weight for belongings and move well on your trip. Wheels, fixed handles, pockets and expansion count in external measurements. Collect the rules for every flight before buying.

Build a table for every flight

  1. Record the operating airline, not only the ticket seller.
  2. Record fare and class.
  3. Copy piece count, size and weight.
  4. Separate personal item and overhead case.
  5. Review battery, liquid and special-item restrictions.

IATA notes that allowance varies by carrier, class and aircraft and that airline conditions apply in its official baggage guide.

Measure the complete case

Stand it upright and measure from the floor, across the widest points and through the deepest loaded pocket. Include wheels, fixed handles, feet and protrusions. Repeat with expansion closed and open. Ask for written clarification when a specification does not say whether wheels are included.

Empty weight and available payload

Subtract case weight from the fare limit. A 3.5 kg shell consumes much of a low allowance. A lighter model leaves more payload, but examine structure, fabric, zips and wheels. Carry a scale if shopping during the journey.

Hard or soft, two wheels or four

Design Possible benefit Check
Hard shell Structure and easy cleaning Flex, marks, closure and parts.
Soft case Pockets and some adaptability Fabric, seams, rain and overfilling.
Two wheels Protected wheels and forward travel Needs tilting and arm load.
Four wheels Upright movement and turns Protrusion and loaded rolling.

Test wheels and handle under load

Pack a realistic weight. Cross smooth flooring, joints and a ramp, turn and reverse. The telescopic handle should not twist excessively or force short steps. Check top and side handles and their attachment. Double wheels alone do not prove durability.

Organisation without wasted volume

Dividers and pockets help but add weight and impose shape. Try packing cubes, a used-clothing bag and accessible document space. Never place essential medication, documents or irreplaceable items in a case that might be gate-checked.

Closures, repair and guarantee

Inspect zip teeth, sliders, seams, corners and wheel mounts. An integrated lock controls opening but does not make a case indestructible. Search for wheels, handles and pulls. A long guarantee only helps when parts, labour, transport and exclusions are clear.

Before leaving for the airport

  • Measure and weigh the closed case again.
  • Save the allowance attached to the booking.
  • Leave margin for scale variation and purchases.
  • Prepare a small bag in case of gate checking.
  • Remove power banks and items that must remain in the cabin.

If empty weight is the priority, continue with the focused lightweight-case guide.
