Utiel: Town Hall, underground cellars and Bodega Redonda

The photograph shows the front of Utiel Town Hall: a white façade, balconies, stone doorway, coat of arms and clock. It is neither an overview of the historic centre nor Bodega Redonda. The building occupies Plaza del Ayuntamiento and connects with an underground network invisible from the street.

Former wine cellars survive beneath the centre

The historic quarter contains passages of medieval origin that were gradually adapted for storing and making wine. Tourism documentation estimates about 240 cellars beneath the former enclosure, with access points at the town hall, Puerta Nueva and Puerta del Sol. Only an arranged visit establishes which sections are open.

La Asunción anchors the surface walk

The sixteenth-century Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Church is the centre’s principal monument. Streets, squares and civil architecture explain a town distinct from its modern expansion. Virgen del Remedio Chapel lies about ten kilometres away and should not be described as a stop on the same walk.

Bodega Redonda was built to make wine

The circular building dates from 1891 and retains a conical roof built with stone, brick, iron and timber. Rehabilitated as the Vine and Wine Museum, it also houses the Utiel-Requena PDO Regulatory Council. Displays interpret growing, production and trade; current booking and dates need checking.
