The photograph does not show the outside silhouette of Paterna Tower. It frames a ceramic panel depicting a fantastic animal on an interior wall. The object evokes the local pottery tradition, but the image alone cannot date or attribute it. The tower, cave homes and museum are distinct places and should not be conflated.
The tower commands the former hilltop
Built between the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, the tower belonged to the defensive system around Valencia’s irrigated plain. Its tapering volume rises about 19.5 metres and contains a lower cistern, chambers and terrace. Heritage protection includes the surrounding caves, but does not mean every level is continuously open.
Chimneys reveal homes beneath the ground
The caves were dug mainly from the late eighteenth century and expanded during the nineteenth as population grew and affordable housing was scarce. White vents create the hill’s characteristic profile. Eight restored dwellings form Espai Cultural Coves del Batà, retaining their layout and hosting exhibitions.
The museum documents medieval potteries
The Municipal Ceramics Museum holds archaeological material and wares associated with Paterna’s kilns. Green-and-manganese pottery, lustreware and socarrats reveal a trade that reached Mediterranean markets. The photographed panel should not be labelled medieval without a catalogue record confirming that attribution.
This documentary review corrects the visual description and separates tower, caves and collection. It does not verify the panel’s maker or date, opening, works, stairs, terrace, exhibitions, bookings, temperature, ventilation or accessibility on site.
