Cuatretondeta is a small El Comtat municipality at the foot of the Serrella range. Its defining feature is Els Frares, a line of limestone pinnacles rising above the village and visible from its streets. A visit can be a quiet walk around the centre and Santa Ana church or a demanding hike into the mountains; this guide keeps those choices separate because they require very different levels of preparation.

The principal landmark in the village is Santa Ana church, built between the 18th and 19th centuries according to the regional tourism authority. The square and nearby streets preserve the settlement’s rural scale and open views towards the mountains. This is the right starting point for a short visit and a useful place to orient yourself before taking any trail.

Els Frares de la Serrella

These pointed formations are the most recognisable element of the local landscape. Karst erosion has shaped columns that resemble robed figures, explaining their name, “the friars”. They can be identified from the village, so seeing them does not require a full mountain route. Reaching them on foot involves checking ascent, duration and ground conditions.

Cova Foradada, snow pits and protected flora

Routes in the Serrella lead towards Cova Foradada and cross areas containing old snow pits and botanical micro-reserves. The town council also identifies Penya Àfrica and Hort dels Frares. These are specific local features, but all belong to a mountain outing: use an established track and avoid shortcuts through protected plant habitats.

Font de la Vinyeta and Font Roja

The municipal tourism page recommends Font de la Vinyeta and Font Roja as countryside stops. The former includes a recreation area, but using barbecues always depends on current rules and the daily wildfire risk. The flow from a natural spring is never guaranteed, so carry sufficient drinking water rather than relying on it.

Walk around Santa Ana church and the centre, locate Els Frares from streets facing the range and add an accessible spring only when road and weather conditions are suitable.

Mountain day

Choose one recognised itinerary towards Els Frares or Cova Foradada, check its distance and ascent and return with daylight to spare. Do not combine both automatically: the Serrella is rocky, and walking time depends heavily on the group’s ability.

Food and local life

The council names regional tapas including capellanets, abisinis, sangueta and coraeta, together with baked rice and grilled meat. These are more useful local references than a generic list of Mediterranean dishes. Services are limited in a small village, so opening times and reservations should be confirmed before travelling.
